Description:

General Information

The Head of the Hooch is a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) head race on the Tennessee River ending at Ross’s Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. All boats are started sequentially and will race against the clock.

The Head of the Hooch encourages all participating organizations/schools/clubs to be members of the US Rowing Association. If you or your organization is not a member of US Rowing contact:

No alcohol consumption will be permitted at the regatta or on the venue grounds.

Practice Session

Regatta marshals will be on the course during the practice session held on Friday, November 6th, from noon to 5:30m. No practice will be allowed on race days. For safety purposes, no boats shall be allowed to launch before noon or after 5:00 pm. All crews must be off the water no later than 5:30 p.m. During practice, race traffic patterns (stay to the left, port side) apply throughout the course. Penalties of 1 minute or disqualification from the regatta may be assessed for violation of this rule.

Important Deadlines

A) Electronic Entry through the Register link (highly recommended):

  • Entry window from Saturday, September 5th at 12:00 am through Thursday, October 15th at 11:59 pm via the Register link.
  • Payment: either by credit card through RoninRacing or by check accompanied by the Fee Summary Form, postmarked no later than October 15th.
  • Release of Liability (download): if not already on file for 2009 with rowingwaiver.com, either fill out the waiver form on
  • line (highly recommended) or mail to Head of the Hooch, postmarked no later than Thursday, October 15th, unless other arrangements have been made through the registrar.

B) Mail-in Entry:

  • Entry must be postmarked within the entry window of September 1st at 12:00 am through Thursday, October15th at 11:59 pm.
  • Payment: by check accompanied by Individual Boat Entry Form and Fee Summary Form, post-marked no later than Friday, October 16th.
  • Release of Liability (download): if not already on file for 2009 with rowingwaiver.com, either fill out the waiver form on line (highly recommended) or mail to Head of the Hooch, post-marked no later than October 6th.

Release of Liability Waivers

The Head of the Hooch requires Release of Liability (download) only if one is not on file with rowingwaiver.com. However, all junior team coaches must carry and be able to provide a Release of Liability for each member of the team. Junior coaches will be asked to provide the regatta with a parent signed Release of Liability for each participant at Registration if they have not already been mailed in.

Refunds and Scratch Fees

Entry fees will be refunded (minus a scratchfee of $2 per entry) for scratches made between Friday, October 16th and Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 11:59pm EDT. Scratches after this date will forfeit their entry fees. A $50 scratch fee will apply for no shows on race day.

Saturday Entry Limits

For Saturday events, crews may be limited to two entries per event. Additional entries will be permitted if space allows on a first come, first served basis. If more than two boats per event are entered, please letter entries (A, B, C) in priority order. Scratch fees do not apply for entries that cannot be accommodated due to entry limits.

If Saturday entry limits are needed, C crews will be entered in the order that entries were received. If all C crews can be accommodated, D crews will be entered in the same fashion, and so on.
