Brahms chose the title “Tragic” for his overture to emphasize the turbulent, tormented character of the piece, conveying and eliciting emotional impressions. Mozart’s Piano Concerto, performed by returning pianist Qing Jiang, has a dark beauty and is one of the most celebrated pieces ever written. Schumann’s uplifiting 2nd symphony, written while he was in ill health, has strong undertones and influence from Bach and Beethoven.
