This documentary plays like a thrilling whodunit as it seeks to solve what happened to the world-renowned Barnes art collection, which included hundreds of masterpieces by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso worth billions. A self-made man with a well-trained eye, Dr. Albert Barnes assembled the art in the 1920’s and snubbed the provincial elites in his hometown of Philadelphia by housing the collection in a Pennsylvania suburb and leaving control of the collection to the trustees of Lincoln University. After his death, lawyers and business people swarmed to exploit its resources, what some would call the “heist of the century.”
