A wayward Arab youth lands in prison at the tender age of 19. To survive the ever-present violence, he aligns himself with the Corsican gang who rules the prison. Though he cannot read nor write, he
educates himself in so many different ways that he ultimately manages to challenge the prison's power structure and construct a little empire of his own. The film won the Grand Prix at Cannes and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
