One, two, three, four, come and see what's new and more! Just in time for the Season, In-Town Gallery is bringing a fun shopping experience, "Holiday BazART!" to Chattanooga's North Shore District. The wonderful array of all new work by some of the region's finest artists will kick off on the First Friday, November 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and introduces the exceptionally fine woodwork of Lowell Axley and Doug Barker and the excellent contemporary realism of Lori Ryan's paintings. That's not all, though. The artist-elves at In-Town have created one-of-a-kind, original work especially priced in the spirit of gift giving as our gift to you. Stop in any time during the season and find that unique "something special" in the Holiday BazART.
The new members featured this month at In-Town reflect the changing trends in Southern design. Taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary is what Doug Barker's woodwork is about. "I strive to create beautiful objects…and make them prettier than they need to be. All of us need a mirror, but there is no need to have a boring mirror!" A similar spirit can be found in Lori Ryan's contemporary paintings. Lori's work draws attention to those everyday things we often take for granted, like her painting of a summer-fresh tomato in which she magnifies the beauty to a larger than life format. The large-scale paintings bring an element of sophisticated realism to the gallery, while Lowell Axley's woodwork forms a bridge between the sophisticated and the rustic. It's a perfect match for Chattanooga and those searching for a uniquely "New Chattanooga" flavor in their décor. Little things like preserving the natural edge on an expertly turned and finished walnut bowl show the artist's sensitivity to his environment. He honors the sophisticated elegance of the wood and its grain but maintains a rustic outdoorsy quality.
The Holiday BazART and feature of new members will continue through the month of November at In-Town Gallery. Founded in 1974, the 35-year-old gallery is considered one of the oldest cooperative art galleries in the nation. Located on the "Hip to Historical" North Shore, at 26A Frazier Avenue, between the Market Street and Walnut Street bridges, adjacent to Coolidge Park, it is open 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, and until 8:00 pm on most First Fridays. Call 423-267-9214 for information, or visit the website: www.intowngallery.com.
